Activities In and Around Montgomery County

Sunday, June 8, 2008 Diabetes Association "Tour de Cure"
We are having trouble finding enough hams to work the event.
If any MARC folks would be interested in helping out, it would be greatly appreciated.
Contact Greg Drew N3MXX or Willy Williams KC0GNH for more information.

Saturday, July 19, 2008 Rockville Twilighter Runfest 8K, 6:00 pm - 10:30 pm
Due to typically high evening temperatures in July, Hams play an important role in health and safety.
The event usually has a volunteer dinner at 6:00 p.m. at the Montgomery County EOC, with the run beginning about 8:45 p.m. This event will probably use a local 440 MHz repeater.
Contact Bob NK3I for more information.

Sunday, July 27, 2008 Riley's Rumble, 7:00 am - 10:00 am
This is a half-marathon (about 13 miles) that the Montgomery County Roadrunner's Club uses
as a tune-up for the Marine Corps Marathon. The event is held in Poolesville along the Montevideo-Sugarland-Hughes Road corridor, with a stub down to Riley's Lock (Lock 24 of the C&O Canal).

It usually draws about 600 runners, and it appears that last year they had some runners develop heat exhaustion in the last few miles that required hospital transport. Cell phone coverage in the area is apparently problematic; hence, the request for ham radio assistance.

It should be understood that some capability better than an HT with a standard rubber duck would be required. Additional details about the event are available.

Any radio operators who would be interested in providing communications for the event
are requested to contact Bob NK3I.

Sunday, September 14, 2008 Parks Half Marathon, 6:00 am - 11:00 am
Contact Bob NK3I for more information.

Saturday, September 27 to 28, 2008 Capital Challenge Walk MS,
early AM (Sat) to early evening (Sun)

MS Walkers are affected by their core temperature and can need assistance at any time.
Hams play a vital role in health and safety for this event.

It is possible to "commute" both days to help with this event but it's logistically simpler (and more fun!)
to stay for the duration. Bring indoor "camping" gear (cushion and simple bedding) and a change of clothes
if you are staying overnight with the walkers. Shower facilities and meals are provided.

A 2m/70cm HT is best and is sufficient for most event communications needs.
Two or three people may be assigned to SAG vehicles - a 2m/70cm mobile, 12V battery and mag-mount is best.

Some information is available about the event (as of May 2008, the walker's route in "Event Details"
is not yet available) at the Capital Challenge Walk website. Hams should register first via WC4J
and not by the website unless you are registering other family members as walkers.

Contact Brian Cochran WC4J to register or for more information.

Sunday, November 2, 2008 Rockville 10K/5K, 7:30 am - 10:30 am
